Minister Ritz trade mission a success

GERRY RITZ (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Minister) announced today exploratory discussions on the possibility of a Canada-Turkey Free Trade Act will begin in early October of this year. During the meeting with Turkey State Minister of Foreign Trade, discussed were the reciprocal benefits of free trade. For example, a potential agreement that could eliminate import duties of up to 20 per cent, strengthen the investment environment, and allow year round access to this market, opening significant opportunities for Canadian exporters.

Canadian exports to Turkey reached over 890 million dollars in 2009, which included over 160 million dollars worth of agricultural goods. Continuing this positive trend is a priority for both countries.

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Turkish Agriculture Minister Eker and Ritz signed a new memorandum of understanding that will work to strengthen relations and improve cooperation between our two countries. Also, as a result of our discussion, there’s agreement to begin technical negotiations to resolve a number of market access issues, including access for Canada’s high quality dairy and goat genetics.
